As crazy as it may sound there are answer for all these questions, but we never take the time out to find them. However, John Catapano, the founder of RandonFaq.com has the answers too all these questions. With over 330,000 unique visitors to date he keeps these random facts coming. I had the opportunity to interview him and find out how he started such a great site.
When did you start RandomFaq.com?
In September of 2006.
How did you come up with the idea?
A friends of mine who knew that I was full of useless information asked me to develop the domain after he had already purchased it.
How do you come up with the topics you write about?
I either work off of a list I've compiled throughout the day. People now know to direct their facts in my direction. When this doesn't work out I spend hours on the Internet reading countless pages looking for something perfectly fact-worthy to present itself.
What are your most read stories?
The top 5 facts according to Google Analytics are:
V. Translucent Teeth
IV. 5 Second Rule
III. Sparking Invention (About the Lighter and the Match)
II. Penis Fish
I. A Bee Knows (About Bees trained by the CIA)
What is your favorite RandomFaq?
"Chickens in Groovy Contact Lenses" because it was pretty informative and fun to write and also fun to make the image of the Chicken.
How many readers do you have today?
336,335 unique people have visited the site to date.
What is the hardest about finding RandomFaq?
The hardest thing is probably researching for hours thinking I had something interesting which turns out to be something obvious or untrue. It's hard to start a new one after days like that.
Which Faq shocked you the most in your research?
Well there are a whole bunch of facts that deal with a mini ice age in that includes the painting of the Scream from Scandinavia, a volcano in Indonesia, the reason people in the US drink beer and not wine like in Europe, and Stratavarious violin wood. All of these happen to be connected to the same event. This was quite shocking.
What's some of the response that you get from your readers about what you write about?
I don't get much feedback. I have set up the site email, but the only regular emailer is my grandmother. Please email John_randomFAQ@yahoo.com with comments and fact suggestions :)
How would you like to expand RandomFaq, and where do you see it going in the near future?
I could see me publishing the facts into book form and hopefully making some money from that.
Why should people read your RandomFaqs?
Because they impress and shock almost everyone who read them; and there is a fact for everyone.
